Drink recipes: Godmother

Children are often given a godmother at birth. The godmother is supposed to help teach and nurture the child. Godmothers can be gentle, stern, or a combination of both.

Appropriately named, the Godmother cocktail is a sweet drink that'll kick your ass and give you a headache if you overindulge.

Ingredients:
1 oz vodka
1/2 oz Amaretto

Use a high quality vodka and Amaretto DiSarrono for a smoother finish.

Serving suggestions:
A Godmother is usually served on the rocks in a short cocktail glass. On a hot summer day, make a Godmother snocone by pouring the alcohol over shaved ice.

For a classier presentation, shake the alcohol with ice and strain into a martini glass. Garnish with a lemon twist, a sprig of cinnamon basil.

On a cold winter night, you might crave a warmer drink. Instead of serving a Godmother over ice, warm it up and serve it in a brandy snifter. Give it a lighter touch by adding 1/2 cup boiling water. Garnish with a lemon twist or add a cinnamon stick stirrer.

Food pairings:
Pair a Godmother with apple pie, pecan pie or chocolate cake for dessert or drink it with a salty appetizer like mixed nuts, sliced apples or pears, or almonds dipped in dark chocolate.

A variation - the Godfather:
For scotch drinkers, make a Godfather instead by substituting scotch for the vodka. For this recipe, a blended scotch will probably suffice. The sweet Amaretto will mask the distinctive characteristics of a single malt scotch, so save the single malts for sipping on their own.
