Daily, we breathe in millions of tiny particulates suspended in the air and for most of us, its okay, but for the millions who suffer with sinusitis it's the beginning of a sinus condition that has no cure and is often debilitating. For those who suffer with aching eyes, throbbing headaches and swollen faces any relief is welcome, so, if you're one of them check out this article, which offers tips for relieving sinus pressure.
*Humidifiers and Air Purifiers
Use an air purifier to remove dust and allergens from the air in your home, especially in your bedroom. Use a humidifier to regulate the moisture in the air of your home. The level of humidity should be 30% to 60%. This will help to cut back on sinus irritation from dry air.
*Nasal Irrigation
Try nasal irrigation with a saline solution to clean out your sinus. Using a warm water flush will also alleviate the pain. Check out this site for complete how-to info.
*Over the Counter Relief
Try an over the counter nasal spray to clear out your sinus and an antihistamine to fight allergens. If your pain is sever or persistant, talk to your doctor about a prescription for this.
*Steam Inhalation
Try a steam bath of water and a few drops of eucalyptus oil, Vicks Vapor Rub or Mentholatum. Make a tent with a towel over a pan of this bath and breathe it in. It is very soothing and will temporarily unclog the sinus, which will afford some lessening of the pain. Taking a hot shower will also help as you breathe in the warm steam.
*Warm Wet Heat
Wet a washcloth with hot water and ring it out. Lie down and place this over your face for a few minutes until it cools. The moist air you breathe in plus the warmth next to your sinus cavities will help with the pain. Repeat as needed, as often as you like.
*Food and Drink
Eat a well balanced diet and include some spicy foods, which open up your clogged sinus. Hot beverages such as tea, cocoa and coffee are also comforting. Chicken noodle soup will not only comfort your soul but also will help comfort swollen and sore nasal passages. Try sucking on a piece of hard peppermint candy.
*Rest
Getting enough rest will help your immune system fight off germs, which cause sinus infections as well as helping you to recover from the common cold.
*Cover Up
Cover your nose and mouth with a scarf when you go out into the cold air of winter or when the Particulate Index is high. The cold air sucks moisture from your body. Consider wearing a dust mask when you must do something that stirs up dust such as raking leaves, mowing grass, vacuuming or dusting your home.*Identify and Avoid Known Triggers
The most common triggers are air pollutants, smoke, dust and dust mites, molds and mildew, pet dander, pollen, viruses, bacteria, and fungi. Staying inside when the pollen count is high, driving with car windows shut and wearing a dusk mask are three ways to avoid sinus irritants.
*Avoid Sick People
Colds are spread easily. Often after or during a cold we develop a sinus infection, which may hang around long after the cold is history. Avoiding others with a cold will lessen your chance of getting one.
*Don't Smoke
Don't smoke and avoid those who do. It's a proven fact that smoke of any kind irritates the sinus passages and causes them to swell, which restricts the flow of mucus and allows for clogging of the sinus.
Remember, the best way of relieving sinus pressure is to prevent it from happening. You may not be able to eradicate it totally from your life, but by eating healthy, getting plenty of rest and exercise and avoiding those things, which place you at your risk, you will be able to tell a difference in the volume and severity of the attacks.
