What I would like to know, regarding this whole War in Iraq issue, is this: Where are the feminists? Where are those who created the huge outcry about Darfur? And where are the people who stand up for civil and human rights?
Oddly enough, most of them are opposing the war.
Though the U.S. Armed forces didn't get the best leadership on this war in Iraq, you can't argue the fact that we removed a brutal dictator who filled his country with rape rooms, torture chambers and mass graves. We found those things.
You can't argue the fact that the overthrown regime had a HORRIBLE human rights record. People would be killed for speaking against the "president." We uncovered their bodies.
You can't argue the fact that women were not free. They weren't free to speak against their men, and by no means did their voices count in society. That's why they were so excited to come out and vote when the new Iraqi government gave them the chance.
Revolution most often in human history takes bloodshed. Granted - the military operations were less-than-ideal in Iraq, and a whole lot more bloodshed than was necessary happened. It is nothing less than a tragedy. Absolutely. I agree with that 100 percent.
It doesn't mean we give up. Especially at this stage.
We can't discount the positive results of our presence in Iraq, as much as the newspapers and TV news shows that we see want to discount them. A corner has been turned. The U.S. and coalition forces have a stragety that is working. Terrorists are being killed at a staggaring rate. And the Iraqi government is clawing its way into authority.
Why, at this point, would ANYONE want to quit now?
The United States is where it should have been from the beginning of the invasion - standing for freedom for all people, and helping the good and the fair overcome the hateful and the oppressive, AND doing it competently.
If we step back now, certainly the opening would be created for genocide. At the very least, the terrorists would make a bloody grab for power and safe-haven.
It's not good for Iraq. But, more importantly, it's not good for America (Face it, while fighting for the innocent Iraqis is nobel, the U.S. is in this for its own best interest. That's what countries do.)
To answer "yes" to this question is to admit you'd rather see the United States and its objective defeated, even in the face of more bloodshed.
The fact that some people want this for political gain is sad.
The fact that some people want this because it's "best for peace" is alarming - people en masse shouldn't be so ignorant about the facts on the ground. News outlets should be ashamed at their role in this - which primarly has been reporting the negative and ignoring the positive.
You want to protect the United States?
Keep our troops in Iraq.
The positive side effect - and the one you'll never read about in the news - is that we're keeping people over their safer, too.
