How to ask a complete stranger on a date

We are all strangers until we actually meet. The one way to guarantee that we do is to open our mouths and speak. If you are interested in someone new, the first step to take is to approach him or her. Introduce yourself with a smile.

Start small talk. Discuss safe topics such as weather and local news. Break the ice by trying to keep the conversation going. Notice the shirt they are wearing, the book they are reading, or another simple detail and comment on that. This is a terrific way to start a conversation.

Test the waters. Make sure that the person you are interested in is single. It can be heartbreaking for all those involved if a relationship or even a date begins under false pretenses. "Are you single?" should not be the first words out of your mouth but it should definitely come up early into the conversation. Drop simple hints, if you need to, to find out if they are interested.

Compliment them but don't go overboard. Don't make it seem as though you are only interested in a temporary physical relationship. Be weary of cheesy pick up lines. Unless the person receiving them is very drunk, they generally don't work.

Send a romantic secret admirer letter. Most people love the idea that someone admires or even notices them from afar. Write them a poem or simple letter and ask them to meet you some place. Be careful with this plan because stalking is against the law and if the person is paranoid or uncomfortable with the idea, they may press charges.

Look for common hobbies. Find something that you both would enjoy and invite them along. If the two of you have a mutual friend or acquaintance, you might also want to have them double date with you. It is often easier to relax when there is a bigger group. You can also have that same person put in a good word for you.

There is nothing to it but to do it. Don't overcomplicate the situation by practicing a speech in front of the mirror. The longer it takes to say anything, the harder it may seem. Just let your words flow naturally. Take a deep breath and ask. You won't know the answer until the question is on the table.

If they aren't interested, that's okay too. Rejection isn't easy but it's simpler to take from someone you do not know and may never see again. Take a chance. You may be glad you did.
