The dynasty is over.
The Yankees will need more than a year to rebuild the foundation that eroded in 2001. During the last six years, Yankee management has frantically scrambled to fill gaping holes. Shelling out millions to lackluster veterans, Yankee leadership finds itself back at square one. Yankee fans may be in denial, but baseball fans across the nation no longer fear the Yankee regime.
This year marks an important shift in leadership. The aging Steinbrenner has handed off authority to his sons, who are just as obnoxious as he is, but not nearly as smart. Hank Steinbrenner's recent comments to the media clearly denote a frustration with the current turn of events (A-Rod leaving, Posada and Rivera undecided). If the Yankees were in a position to reclaim past glories in 2008, why would key elements of the team be interested in leaving? These players understand that the Yankees are in a rebuilding stage, a stage that may last several years.
It's hard to ignore the Boston Red Sox. Having swept their second World Series since 2004, the Boston Red Sox continue to dominate the opposition. Yankee fans are proud of young players such as Chamberlain, Kennedy, and Hughes. However, these guys didn't help the Yankees get past the first round of the playoffs. When you consider the young talent in Boston, these guys don't match up with Papelbon, Pedroia, Youkilis, and Okajima. In order to reclaim their past glories, the Yankee leadership needs to build a young team that works together and rises to the occasion.
In the meantime, a new dynasty has begun.
