In our local school the PTG (Parent-Teacher-Group) gave the teachers each a fifty dollar gift card to help reimburse them for the school supplies they bought. My daughter, a first grader has a teacher who makes pac-man balls (out of her own pocket) that chew up words. A novel idea that the children love. Parents are expected to purchase tissues and hand sanitizer and supply the children's snacks.
Why can't the district pick up some of these costs? Perhaps it's because there's so much pork in the upper administration of the schools these days! Our district has several principals, vice-principles, directors and even a "director of student services" whatever that is. In the old days, a guidance counselor would double as a teacher. In the elementary school I attended we had a principal, his secretary and a janitor. Plus several teachers. Is all this administration really necessary?
If the teachers are given the supplies they need to work with perhaps hey would be more interested in continuing their training. Supplying the proper work environment is conducive to constructive teaching. If a teacher feels put upon to supply what the children need is she then going to befell put upon to teach those children?
