Just like a Rembrandt that is distinct and utterly unique, each piece of oak is different from the next, bearing a one of a kind beauty of its own. A member of the hardwood family, once shaped and detailed into a piece of furniture, oak will last over a hundred years with very little care.
The finish and the elements of weather are the only deterrents of damaging oak. Polyurethane protects a wood best by sealing off any air that could wear down the grain. Cold and dampness over a long period of time is wood's worst enemy but also exposure to high temperatures can also lead to a shortened life.
When caring for your oak piece, remember, you are not caring for the wood itself but the finish that is sealing the wood from the elements. Harsh chemicals can act like a stripping agent when used often. This will lead to premature wearing of the coating. An oil based soap one or two times a year will keep your furniture clean and well. Dusting regularly will keep it beautiful.
If your oak becomes exposed due to wear, not all is lost. Stripping, sanding and re-coating can bring back the life of oak as long as it has not been exposed to the point of warping. Oak was put on this earth to take care of man for many years to come. It is our job to take care of this durable wood.
