Natural ways to get gorgeous hair

My daughter in law hates me. Why? Because my hair is in better condition than hers. It's thicker, shinier, with no grey. And I'm 55 and suffering from Lupus, which means every time I comb my hair (I daren't use a brush!) I get nearly enough hair to stuff a cushion. So what's my secret and how much does my crowning glory cost me? The answer is, there's no secret and the cost is minimal.

In my teens, I worked for my cousin, who was a hair stylist. I was like a kid in a sweetshop, with a different colour and style every week. Until one day, when a lady who had always bleached and bee-hived her hair at home come to us for help. There was little we could do, because what was left of her hair resembled a field after hay making. All she had was short yellow tufts of stubble. And she was only in her early 30's. I resolved there and then to treat my hair with the respect it deserved; after all, it has to last me a lifetime.

Since then, my hair routine has consisted of a twice weekly shampoo and condition treatment with good quality products. I never buy cheap shampoos or 'value' brands. In hair care, as in so much else, you get what you pay for. I have a salon perm every two years, to give my hair body and some curl. And this is the only time I ever subject my hair to a hairdryer. I always allow my hair to dry naturally. It's not inconvenient, if you work out your best time to wash and dry. In my case, as I don't work, it's first thing in the morning.

When I want my hair to look really special, I use heated rollers. As they only need to be in for about 30 minutes, they don't damage your hair. I try not to use them more than twice a week, and I only use the minimum of hairspray to hold my style in place. I have a salon trim about three times a year, and that is all I do.

I know I'm lucky in that I have inherited from my mother's family the ability not to go grey until well into old age, but when the silver threads start to appear, I shall resist the temptation to hide them. We are as God made us, and natural is always best.
