Many believe that if we pay children to succeed then they will. Many teenagers believe that since their parents get paid to go to work, they should also get paid to go to school. However, there is an inherent flaw in both philosophies. First off, not everything lends itself to a material reward. The old saying that "the best things in life are free", seems lost on America's youth. There is more to life than money even in a consumer based, market economy. By equating all achievements with cash, children fail to learn the beauty of a sense of accomplishment for a job well done. There is no appreciation for setting a goal and striving to reach it, then after hard-work and determination achieving that goal.

Second, education is a privilege that is greatly under appreciated in this country. We are provided with free education for everyone, a right that is fairly uncommon in the rest of the world. The privilege of education is in itself its own reward. If you have ever watched documentaries or read personal accounts of what students are willing to do in foreign counties to receive an education, you have a sense of why our right to be educated is one of the greatest rights of our great nation. {Are your children willing to walk five or more miles to school each day?} An education provides the pathway to build a life and better a life. It is a key that can unlock many doors and a tool that can never be taken from you. To equate education to a tally sheet of dollars and cents earned at the end of each report card is like saying wisdom and knowledge have no value. We need to teach our children to value their education, to want to learn for knowledge sake, and to never take for granted to freedom to study hard and achieve.

Every aspect of life has currency, however not all of it is cold, hard cash. Going to school is a job, a career just like any other in the paying world. However, grades are the payment. Better grades opens more doors, leads to greater opportunity and results in greater chances for success. As stated above, the knowledge is its own reward. Equating grades with dollar amount minimizes that benefit of knowledge gained. While a report card with straight A's is impressive and laudable, learning, truly learning should be the goal of all educational experiences.

Likewise, do adult get paid for EVERYTHING that they do and is there always a reward for every action, or should there be. Do you give to your favorite charity so that
