Starting a career in advertising

Whether fresh out of college with degree in advertising, or a seasoned member of the real world looking to make a career change, advertising can be a very lucrative career choice. Before making that leap you might want to ask yourself a few questions.

Are you prepared for the work that is required of an advertising agent? Regardless of whether you are employed by an agency or are working freelance, to become successful in advertising the hours are long and the work is hard. Advertising is a very competitive business and it will require determination and a thick skin to enter this field.

More often than not, you will be required to work on commission. Having a strong sales background is helpful in closing deals. Advertising executives must be sharp and of high intellect. If a prospective client regards you as anything less, the deal will be lost.

Creativity is possibly the most important trait an advertising executive can possess. Designing an advertisement that will be effective and get results requires much planning and a lot of creativity. The ability to brainstorm and work well under the pressure of deadlines is a must. Successful advertising executives must think out-of-the-box to develop the best ad campaign possible.

With all of the characteristics above, one also needs the ability to get things done. Without the ability to put into action the ideas you create, your advertisements are useless. Executing the plan is what brings in the revenue for the customer, thus brings in your revenue as well.

If you believe you have what it takes to become a successful advertising executive, by all means, go forth and proper. The decision you must make now is whether to begin freelance, or attempt to attain a position with an advertising agency. If you are new to the field it is advisable to gain experience while working with an agency. This will allow you to put into action the creativity in your head, and will look great on a resume.

Whether freelance or with an agency you will need to create a portfolio. This can be done by re-creating advertisements on the web. Use the portfolio to display your unique abilities and demonstrate how you can make advertisements more appealing and effective.
