This Christmas Nintendo have really got away with it by the skin of their teeth. I was beginning to lose faith recently after going into my local games store to buy a new game and finding that I already owned the top three games in the charts. Those three games being Wii Sports, Zelda: Twilight Princess and Red Steel. The three games that my Wii was bundled with when I bought it last Christmas. Thankfully, Nintendo have finally got going and there is a really meaty line-up of great games coming out in the next few months. This is my top 5 from the recently released and upcoming titles.
ROCKSTAR TABLE TENNIS
Yes, I know, it's table tennis. But never before has table tennis looked so good. The Xbox version was remarkable in its sensitivity and attention to detail, and I have a feeling that the Wii version will be no different. While the graphics might take a hit, the gameplay itself is set to work perfectly with the wiimote. A really nice family option.
GUITAR HERO III
If you don't like Guitar Hero, you are wrong. Usually I am open to everyones opinion and will listen and consider my options, but really, if you don't like it...just face it you like it. It isn't possible NOT to like it. And with so many varied artists such as Weezer, Iron Maiden, Muse and the Beastie Boys it really does have something for everyone. And I can't wait to get my hands on one of those controllers.
SUPER MARIO GALAXY
Finally, after much delay, a 3D Mario game comes to the Wii (no offense Super Paper Mario, but you weren't proper 3D really). There's not really much that can be said about this game. It's Mario. Collect stars, jump on heads, save the princess. Not exactly the most original game of the century but if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The gravity feature sounds very interesting and it will be good to see if it works as well in practice as it does in theory.
GEOMETRY WARS
I wasn't sure whether to put this in here or not, but I think it will be worth checking out for curiosities sake if nothing else. The original Xbox Arcade game was absolutely infuriating, but ingenious at the same time, it will be fascinating to see how they have integrated the Wii controls into this version of it
NIGHTS: JOURNEY OF DREAMS
Potentially the game that every hardcore Sega fan has been waiting for. A sequel to a game that was loved by many, and is thought to be long overdue. Originally intended for the Sega Dreamcast but discontinued, this endearing and visually wonderful game is sure to be a Christmas bestseller across the board. All we can hope for is that it lives up to its expectations.
So there you have it, and I hope that your Christmas is as game-packed as mine will be. And lets all just burn our bank statements in January shall we?
