Tips for succeeding in an online university

As a student who has completed a significant amount of his college education at an online university, I can attest to the convenience and flexibility that an online education can offer. I am a person who has a schedule that fluctuates a great deal. Being stuck with traditional classes at a traditional college that require you to attend at set days and times can be very difficult. It's not always feasible depending on your work and/or lifestyle habits to attend a traditional college. In addition, having to commute to school and then hassle over finding a parking spot only adds to the inconvenience and stress of taking traditional on-campus classes. When at all possible, I elect to take as many online courses as I can. I believe that, for the person who has the right motivations and outlook, an online education can be a great thing!

In my personal opinion, the greatest assets to have in terms of taking online classes and completing your education online are motivation and discipline. You have to be motivated, and you have to be disciplined. With online classes, there is nobody there to make you work; you don't have to get up at a certain hour, you don't have to be at school at a certain hour, and you have a huge amount of leeway in terms of how and when you work. That's where the motivation and discipline factors come in to play. With so much flexibility at your disposal, it's very easy to get lazy and to slack off in your responsibilities. You have to remember to be on your toes; you have to make sure you work and get your assignments done, and you have to have the motivation and desire to do what needs to be done: assignments, online discussions, research, and you have to ask questions when you feel the need, either by e-mail or over the phone. It's all about motivation and desire.

Many students feel more comfortable completing their education in the traditional brick and mortar sense; they need to physically attend classes and interact with other students at an actual educational institution. And that's fine! But for those who have the desire and motivation to get the job done, and for those who need the convenience and flexible schedule that an online education can provide, then an online university education is the way to go!
