The Drifter

I drifted into this town about ten years ago
forgetting where I'd been, not knowing where to go
Now what can I say that all this time's gone by
I've done some growing up here on my way to die

we're all born to die, and in between, we've got better things to do

I met a guy the other night, he said we'd met before
I could not place him, he said he was a soldier from the war
And what could I say, but life is just a ride
Please don't hate me if I don't recognize

Born to die and in between, we've got better places to be

The curse, and the contempt, for things familiar, causes resent
To give up, on a dream, is a hurtful and precious thing
damaged goods, the walking wounded are all around us
listen to them sing

Are we born fools, are we born wise
A baby's like an alien to these hardened eyes
Now softening me down to my very core
I think I might have been here once before
I knew I was passing through, same as you
Born to die, and in between, I've got better things to do
