In the last few months, an apparent insurgence of attacks against Biblical Christian beliefs, and the accuracy of the Scriptures, has become more prevalent in my daily activities. Articles, conversations, TV broadcasts, and alike, have contained outright aggressive attitudes on the topics of Christ, the Bible, and even less Christian specific themes of morality, and personal responsibility. Could it be, as a nation, we have reached a level of such disregard, even the founding principles of societal coherence are classified as "religious" and therefore denounced?
History itself bears witness to facts contrary to popular beliefs held within the secular community, of religion tearing apart people. Every civilization known to man, has been founded on a common belief. Whether Biblical or not, these common beliefs served as the guide for various people to work together toward common goals. Beliefs also dictated acceptable conduct within these civilizations, as well as varying forms of judicial processes and punishments for offenders. Of course, a humanist derived sentiment found in todays culture, is that these religious beliefs have caused multitudes of wars between opposing groups throughout the centuries. But, is it truly religion, or simply human nature acting out an inherent aggression under the guise of religion?
One of the few ways to observe the nature of man, free of influences from staunch religious beliefs, is in children. Infants, will operate almost entirely on instinctive motivations of survival. Hunger, discomfort, and pain, are brought to the attention of Mom and Dad, through crying, and this basic form of communication will not cease, until the infants needs are met. Yet, when infants are placed side by side, it is not uncommon for them to fight over possession of an object that both desire to own, such as a rattle or stuffed animal. In essence, as infants, operating on the most basic of fundamental human needs; food, shelter, warmth, and interaction, there is still the presence of a need to poses, and to control. With this in mind, it is easy to understand that the object; rattle, stuffed animal, religion, is irrelevant. The only requirement for a battle to ensue, is for two individuals to come into conflict over control.
This inherent human desire to control, comes into direct conflict with Biblical ideals, while at the same time endorsing, now widely accepted fundamental ideas of the humanist perspective. The most basic example of such a conflict
