Our bathroom smells sweet and tangy from our lemon scented air freshener. The citrus is powerful and covers up the aroma of the most potentially stinky room in the house. People tend to gravitate toward citrus and it's no wonder. The lemon is an amazing thing. It's wildly useful and packs a powerful punch, filled with hidden health benefits.
It's useful for internal plumbing. When taken regularly in the morning, it stimulates the liver to make bile, getting your body ready to digest food for the day. On the same note, mixed with water, it helps with nausea and heartburn and even constipation. It also works as a natural diuretic, so it's useful to treat ailments related to urinary problems.
Lemons are also adept at aiding with minor ailments, like headaches and sore throats. Everyone's mother was on to something when they made us hot tea with lemon when we had tonsillitis. That's because lemon has been shown to hasten wound healing and to help with these throat irritations. It can even help stop minor bleeding, like a nosebleed or gum bleeding when applied directly with a cotton ball. When applied to your lips it can prevent chapping and to your skin it can prevent sunburn.
When used to create balms, it is almost a miracle cure for all types of fever. This is because it naturally causes patients to sweat, thus breaking the fever. This may be one of the reasons why doctors love lemon to help treat malaria. These lemon balms are also use to treat menstrual cramps, arthritis, flatulence and even psychological conditions.
It is also thought that the scent of lemon can clear a person's mind, sharpen focus and calm their spirits. Lemon is also shown to help reduce headaches and to be high in vitamin C, which can aid a person's immune system during cold and flu season.
The health benefits of lemons are far reaching, making the fruit far from sour grapes. Aside from being a healthy thing to have around, it's useful in the kitchen. It freshens our garbage disposal, helps us lift stains and adds a little zing to our water. Lemon just may be nature's super food.
