I am 77 years old, divorced and have lived alone since 1974. After being married for 23 years I had a satisfying career for the next 20 and then retired. Although I have many friends, both men and women, I have not dated in all those years. I live in a retirement community, and like it just fine, although I've been to too many memorial services for my neighbors. Until now I've been keeping myself fairly busy and entertained; waiting my turn, I guess you could say.
You can imagine my great surprise, therefore, when a gentleman of my acquaintance started asking me to accompany him to some concerts and out to dinner. I was quite flattered at first, but then I just became more and more puzzled. "Why is he asking me?" I thought. He's well known in the community, quite accomplished in a number of things, very erudite, and rather handsome, I think. To say nothing of the fact that he's several years younger than I. But as time went on the invitations kept coming. It wasn't long until we had a standing Thursday date: dinner together either at his place or mine and now he comes over every Tuesday evening at 9 p.m. to watch Boston Legal with me.
Out of the blue one day he said, "How would you like to travel with me?"
Shy as I am, I immediately said, "I'd love to!"
Our bus tour on a Fall Foliage trip to New England earlier this month was wonderful. We had more fun than anyone else on the tour, and came home just as congenial as ever. In fact, I'm having more fun than I've had in many, many years.
Waiting in line to die? I don't think so.
