Chester and Florence are not the usual types of names you'd expect for rabbits. Fluffy or Snowy seem more appropriate. But not for our two mischief makers...
After seeing nothing but hamsters for the first 9 years of my life, when i ran downstairs on my 10th birthday, a thrill like no other ran through me as i spotted the little hutch in the corner of the room.
I lifted the blanket that was hiding the contents up, and underneath sitting in the corner was the cutest little rabbit you would ever see. He had a lovely caramel coat, with a snowy white tummy just peeping out as he stood there. His ears were uneven in an adorable way, with one sticking up as the other flopped down, as if he couldn't make his mind up which way was best.
I picked him up. He was light as a feather, and looked up at me with his big mahogany eyes curiously. He remains the best birthday present i have ever received.
Then, there was Florence.
On Easter Sunday morning, we rushed down the stairs as our mum had told us our eggs were in the kitchen. When we got down there, i only had eyes for my Belgian Chocolate Delight. It was only when my mum said "Aren't you going to say Happy Easter to Chester?" that i realized our eggs were sitting on the hutch. I opened the little door, and gasped in surprise. Sitting curled up in the corner of Chester's hutch was a little black rabbit with the cutest little pink mouth. She was very shy and when Chester came bounding up, as if to say,
"What are you doing in my hutch?"
,she scrambled off to the other side.
I scooped her up and stroked her. I realized, although she was entirely black, the little undersides of her paws were Grey. She was our very own Easter Bunny.
Four years later, Chester and Florence haven't changed much. They are still the most perfect little bunnies as ever. But they have a lot more personality. Florence, who incidentally should have been called Fred, as the vet told us a couple of months later, is very cheeky and nibbles everything from wallpaper to socks! Chester spends most of his day cleaning himself, but when he gets a spare moment, jumps up on the couch and shares a cookie or two with me.
I recommend everyone who is looking for a pet that is easy to look after, but still incredibly cute and rewarding to keep, to invest in one of these gorgeous little creatures.
