There is nothing that represents real life in society more then a Soap Opera; that is why we become so enthralled with them. They are shows we can relate to.
Quite often, after the very first episode, we're hooked. Why? Because we're watching something that is so close to what we witness or experience in life everyday that we can't stop.
Too often our television viewing choices are that of loving spouses that never fight, kids that behave perfectly, relationships that never seem to have trouble, in essence, a "Leave it to Beaver" type of scenario. Too often, these programs mislead us by a false representation of what life is: one where there is no problems, no money worries, husbands and wives are always faithful, and that in today's society, is certainly not reality. In real life, not television, we live true reality, and when we can watch what we live, we're sucked in because we feel a connection.
It is so much easier to relate to a show that pertains to either the way we live our lives, or the way others do. We know what we're watching is actors and actresses, but the plots are always believable, because they're written to make us think they are; acted out in the same way most of us would react. They are so true to life that we follow them day after day, the same as we live our lives from one day to the next.
What happens to us on a daily basis doesn't immediately change when the sun goes down - there's not an ending at midnight to what has happened. We wake up, and the saga continues; just like it does on Soap Operas.
We're sucked into our own lives the same way we're sucked into the lives around us. Soap Operas bring to life on the big screen what we already know, what we experience everyday, and we patiently wait for the next episode to air to see the outcome of the prior day's events.
We tend to watch what we can relate too, what we know, and what keeps our attention, and it's usually due to the fact that we understand.
Soap Operas are far from make-believe, in fact, they're so true to the way people behave in today's society that you often find yourself feeling as if you actually know the people you see on the show. You feel for them, you suffer along with them, and you even talk about them to other people as if they were real. You are so caught up in their lives, that you find yourself unable to stop watching what will happen next.
Soap Operas are an ongoing series of the lives of people, who live just like us.
Is it any wonder why we're so easily sucked in?
