Gallstones occur commonly in women as part of the aging process. Bile produced by the liver is stored in the gall bladder for fat digestion. It hardens in some cases to form gallstones. Gallstones can be fouind as single stone or a group of several stones.
Gallstones occur when the balance of chemicals in bile is upset due to reasons like consumption of too much red meat, alcohol consumption, diabetes, obesity, sudden weight loss and due to hormone imbalances.
Tips to avoid gallstones:
1. Add more fibrous diet: Gallstones are less commonly seen among people on a high fiber diet. The high fiber diet plays a greater role in maintaining the cholesterol diet. Gall stone develops when bile contains less bile salts and too much cholesterol. Add more of high fiber diet like whole wheat, oats and plenty of fruits and vegetables daily.
2. Avoid being Obese: Obesity is often linked to gallstones. The risk of gall stone increases by 20%. This again is caused due to high cholesterol levels in obese persons. So avoid being over weight and to cut down too much fatty food stuff in diet.
3. Avoid sudden weight loss: A low calorie diet for sudden weight loss is another culprit. Fasting is another cause that causes increased cholesterol and decreased bile salt levels in the bile. A gradual weight loss decreases the risk compared to sudden weight loss according to experts.
4.Avoid alcohol: Too much alcohol intake can cause gall stones. If you already suffer from gall stone it is better to avoid or to control alcohol intake. A few believe that alcohol consumption coupled with intake of Vitamin C can decrease the incidence of gall stones.(Refer to additional recommended reading below.)
5. Drinking green tea: Green tea is known to have many health benefits. Some studies shows that green tea can lower the incidence of Gallstones by 26% and gall bladder cancer by 45%.
6. Drink plenty of water: Water maintains the balance of salts and fluid content in the bile. Water also plays a very efficient role in flushing away the toxic wastes from the body.
7.Never skip breakfast: Breakfast is an important meal of the day. Skipping breakfast increases the risk of gallstones based on few research studies. A low fat or no fat breakfast can be another natural way to avoid gallstones.
