Car trips can be so much fun for kids and parents! No, this is not a sarcastic statement nor is it meant to cause laughter or fear. There are many things parents can pre-plan to make a car trip an enjoyable time for all. Here is a top ten list of hints to make a car trip a positive and memorable experience.
.Go to the dollar store: Here you will find many items that will entertain your children. Start with a cookie sheet, magnets, paper, art supplies, and a few small puzzles. The backside of the cookie sheet works as a great art studio. Just adhere the paper with the magnets and you have the perfect easel. Will you paint the landscape or the traffic? The front side works as a lap desk for small puzzles and card games.
.Give the children a map and let them highlight the route as you go. Have them look for landmarks and signs. You can create a bingo game with these items as well. Bingo also works on those cookie sheets.
.Packing snacks will help the journey and save money. Pack a small cooler with lunch meat for sandwiches and fruit. Lollipops are a good snack as they last a while. Junk food is always helpful.
.Stop and smell flowers, throw rocks, and gather treasure often.
.Did you know that McDonald's has play areas all over the United States? Play for free.
.Take pictures in random, fun spots. Document all those McDonald play areas.
.Listen to a book on tape.
.Look for out-of-state license plates and personalized license plates.
.Make a scavenger hunt. Write a list of items that the kids can check off as they find or see them. Some ideas are: a red sports car, an animal crossing sign, personalized license plate, an artifact from a stop (rock, toilet paper, napkin, whatever), yellow flower, etc.
.When all else fails, break down and turn on the DVD player.
Having gone on many car trips with children, creativity is key. The more unusual the activity, the more they are going to enjoy the experience. Sit back and enjoy the ride!
