Many people view chiropractors as non-legitimate medical practitioners, yet chiropractic care has helped many, often where conventional medicine has failed.

I know little about the science behind chiropractic care, but it made a huge difference to me when I was rear-ended at 6 months of pregnancy, suffering severe whiplash. If I had gone to a medical doctor, he or she most likely would have offer pain killers, which I would not have been able to take while pregnant.

The chiropractic treatment was not painful as some may imagine. My doctor used an adjuster on my back and legs, rather than manual manipulation, though he at times used this method on my neck. In addition to adjustment, he used ultrasound, the rolling table, and prescribed massage, all of which made a tremendous difference. He gave me a contoured pillow to support my neck while sleeping, though I eventually bought myself a memory foam contoured pillow. What a difference the contoured pillow makes! After a few nights of sleeping on a poor pillow, my neck will hurt without the support.

Perhaps one may say that experiencing neck pain from time to time demonstrates the ineffectiveness of chiropractic care. Who doesn't experience neck pain on occasion? Also, the average person is not aware of the slight misalignment that their spine is probably in from day to day. This misalignment can affect one in so may ways, not always as back or neck pain. Chiropractic care not only can help heal one's back and neck after an auto accident, it can also, because the different vertebrae correspond to different organs, help improve your health in other ways. The chiropractor I saw was well-versed on nutrition and other natural healing methods and sought to help improve my overall health, not simply treat my whiplash symptoms.

Like any doctor, there are good and not-so-good chiropractors. It is wise to do your research as you would when searching for any doctor. Some chiropractors offer free evaluations (mine did, and was recommended by a friend). What have you got to lose?
