I can only write this article based on my own experience. And it's strange, but the same gifts that appealed to my sense of romance when I was young still appeal to me today. I tend to be a very traditional sort of woman, and I believe traditional romantic gifts are the best.

We all know what those are - flowers, candy, perfume, and jewelry. This year, all the traditional favorites were covered. I received three dozen roses, some chocolates, and a new Celtic knot ring that I especially admired. He also gave me the perfume.

The perfume is a yearly event. Each birthday, I am treated to a 1.7 ounce bottle of Opium perfume. It lasts exactly one year. The final week before my next birthday, I'm only spraying the fumes on each morning, but he doesn't replace it until THE big day.

As a special romantic surprise this year, he took the day off! His gift of helping me do the necessities of household chores that day meant a lot to me. The time we spent together was a reminder that we're a team in this life - great birthday gift.

In addition to the above, all of which my husband handled handily, we went out to dinner. We both enjoy Chinese food, so we went to a nice Chinese restaurant and thoroughly enjoyed the meal and the time together. We bought a bottle of good champagne for later in the evening.

Other years, romantic gifts have included breakfast in bed with the CD, "Breakfast in Bed" playing in the background, a trip to the mountains, a trip to the beach for a week, other pieces of jewelry, and religious items. Last year he had a special birthday cake baked for me that was extraordinarily beautiful and a huge surprise.

There are not many romantic gifts I haven't received at one time or another during our long marriage, but the gifts I've appreciated most have been the ones he's given that didn't cost a thing - the gifts of his love, support, and fidelity. These are the most romantic and most appreciated gifts a woman can ever receive.
