To my mind there are four possible or probable choices for the boxer of the year 2007 award. When deciding which boxers are eligible for this type of award i firstly thought only of those who had won all of their fights this year, and secondly those who have made the most progress this year as well. There are a lot of fighters who have won championship belts and a lot who have gone unbeaten, but only a few that have consistently fought the best competition that they could and have remained victorious throughout. The boxer of the year should also be a good ambassador for the sport as well and should be a good representation of what boxing is all about. This being the case there are a few boxers that have put themselves out of the frame with their bad attitudes and misrepresentations of the sport as a whole.
The first prediction i will make is the winner of tonight's fight between Joe Calzaghe from Wales and Mikkel Kessler from Denmark. Both are undefeated with records of 43-0 and 39-0 respectively. This is a modern super-fight at super middleweight with 4 titles being at stake, meaning the winner is undoubtedly the undisputed champion of this weight. The fight being in front of a live crowd of 55,000 gives some indication of what this fight means to the division and to the face of modern boxing as a whole, and a win for either fighter will help to set up other big fights for them in the near future.
Both have big wins under their belts and both have a lot of experience, meaning this fight will not only be the achievement of their respective careers as well should they win, but will also be one of the fights of the year. Unifying 4 titles at any weight is a challenge, but for two fighters who have both been undefeated over their entire careers for to be meeting to decide the absolute best in the division is a very rare thing as well, meaning that the winner of this fight has a very good chance of being crowned fighter of the year 2007 as well.
My second prediction is along the same lines although we now look at the super fight happening in December between the also both undefeated Ricky Hatton of great Britain and Flloyd mayweather of the united states. The fight will be taking place at welterweight and will decide who the best fighter is at both welterweight and light welterweight to some degree as well. Hatton has fought most of his career at light welterweight and has been the recognized number one since he beat the previous champion Kostya Tzu, which
