Birthday gifts are hard work for someone special. When you truly care for someone it's hard to find just the right thing. You want them to be thrilled they received it, and you want to have pride in the fact you are the one who bought it. I've always felt the worst thing was buying something they didn't like then someone else managed the greatest thing and I didn't even think of it.
Some would say making a gift is great way to go, because it shows you truly worked for it, and it came directly from you. But beware of who your man is. Make sure you know his likes and dislikes. If he doesn't show an interest in homemade work, you may end up with hurt feelings when he receives it and doesn't appreciate the value as you do.
Some people it's easy to tell. If he reads books you can look through who the most popular author in his library is, or get him a gift certificate with a book store he would like to go to.
If he's into cars, it's easy to figure out what types he likes and if you are really well off get him one, or if you are like most people, you can find stuff to add to his collection of what he likes about the cars. For instance One of my ex boyfriends had a true knack for older mustangs. he enjoyed working on them as well as driving them. But he could never find the right parts in town. So I went online to look for the part he wanted, I found a mustang parts website that actually had a catalog you could order from at home. So I paid for a one year subscription and made sure it would come in on his birthday. I was shocked to find out how much he truly enjoyed it. And to this day he still has this subscription and orders constantly from it five years later.
It's truly a matter of knowing who you are with. Family and friends can tell you something he's expressed interest in as well.
Personally I try for more of unique gifts. Something that wouldn't really be found to much around town, but he still has an interest in, like the catalog.
There are such a wide range of gifts out there, take the time to get to know your mans likes and dislikes, then do the research to find something that points out to you "thats him".
