Colored knobs vs. the standard variety: The current trend is to replace the traditional brass or copper or black wrought iron cabinet knobs with shiny new colored knobs. The idea is sound if the switch over fits in with the overall look of the cabinets; but if not, I see no reason to got to the extra expense of changing the knobs.
Actually, most wood cabinets that are used in kitchens today do not positivley need knobs. The corner of the cabinet is easily opened and there is nothing to take away from the beautiful wood of the cabinet; and there's nothing that will need replacing. Even the drawers can be pulled out on most cabinets by the bottom of the drawer. In fact neither are inaccessable without knobs.
The reasoning for cabinet knobs is convenience, not their decorative value. It is easier to open a door that has a knob or a handle, but only slightly. The problem of what color these should be does not often apply. It was always kind of understood that the cheaper furniture would have wooded knobs and would be the same color as the furniture. This has always been the case for unpainted cabinets, paint the knobs the same color as the cabinet.
Now that the color of the knobs is an issue, I suggest not making too much of a color change. In other words, do not be too dramatic. Do not go to this extreme: black knobs on white cabinets; or white knobs on black furniture. If, as an example, you have old cabinets that you are painting white, (a new trend) then by all means use a shiny new white knob that will only slightly stand out from the cabinet itself.
A touch of gold in the center or encircling the know would not be totally out of the question if you have other gold accessories in the area. Perhaps your counter tops are yellowish and the gold somehow enhances this, and maybe on your counter you have gold embossed canisters and so on.
When we hear the word color we naturally think of the brightest color and certainly no would add red or green or purple knobs to their kitchen cabinets. I suppose what throws most of us off is in the painted knobs versus the standard brass or copper. Painted in this case meaning painted white or some other soft reflective color that will blend in with the cabinet itself.
Whatever, there's always a first and if it works use any color of knob that fits your purpose. There are among us, however, many that think so what, if the knob is still there and it helps us open the cabinet when we need it too, and does not interfere with us in any other way, why change it. We would only be up for changing the know if one needed replace and a match could not be found. But time changes everything and cabinet knobs are included.
