In all my years of travel - and I've been to every continent on the planet - I have never been to a country like Colombia.
Yes, I know what many will say, digging out their statistics to show that it is one of the most dangerous places on the planet. I cannot and will not deny that Colombia does have problems, and that they are very real for many of the local people caught up in them.
But these problems have diminished in frequency over the course of the Uribe presidency, a point seconded by the huge majority of Colombians who recently voted for a second Uribe term by the biggest majority in the country's history.
The fact is that the reality is very different to the distorted view that is broadcast to the outside world. Only bad news makes the headlines, after all. The areas which lie at the centre of the conflict in Colombia are situated away from all of the country's cities and tourist areas, meaning the traveler can enjoy huge amounts of what the country has to offer in relative safety.
And boy, does it have a lot to offer. Unspoilt coastline, where virgin jungle meets pristne Caribbean beach, the best preserved colonial city in the whole of South America in Cartagena (unfortunately, all most people see of the country), snow-capped peaks, incredible history at San Agustin and Tierradentro, and beautiful countryside in the 'Zona Cafeteria'.
Combine all of that with the fact that the people are the warmest, most genuine and generous that I have met anywhere in the World, and you have a country that should not be missed. Unfortunately, most do.
