The health benefits of lemons

What is yellow, sour, stings when you get it in a cut, and is a common scent in cleaning products? A lemon of course! Did you know, though, that lemons are also good for your health?

DIGESTIVE HEALTH
Lemons can promote a healthy digestive system even though they are often misunderstood as being too acidic to be beneficial. Some of the digestive benefits of lemons mixed with hot water include:

1. Reduce heartburn
2. Relieves nausea
3. Help with hiccups
4. Assist in the removal of intestinal parasites
5. Reduce constipation
6. Dissolve gallstones
7. Reduce flatulence and belching

RESPIRATORY HEALTH
Lemons can also keep your respiratory system healthy, in part because of the high Vitamin C content. They can help with:
1. Asthma
2. Sore throat relief
3. Respiratory infections
4. Tonsillitis
5. Nose bleeds if applied directly but may sting

MENTAL HEALTH
Lemons can help keep your mind as healthy as your body. Some of these benefits include:
1. Increase memory and recall
2. Calm anxieties
3. Clear mind and assist in focusing
4. Nourish brain cells due to potassium content

OTHER AREAS OF HEALTH
Additionally, lemons are reported to benefit many other systems in the body, such as the reproductive system and the cardiovascular system. Lemons are also reportedly beneficial for eliminating certain diseases. The following list includes some of these additional benefits of lemons.

1. Work as a diuretic to flush kidneys and reduce water retention
2. Help with urinary tract infections
8. When mixed with coffee, believed to cure malaria
9. Relieve headaches
10. May stop gum bleeding
11. Treat chapped lips
12. Can relieve sunburn
13. In balm form, can break fevers
14. Can help relieve menstrual cramps
15. Work as an antiseptic to clean wounds
16. Help with rheumatism
17. Stimulate the liver
18. Strengthen blood vessels and can reduce hemorrhage
19. Can help treat high blood pressure
20. Relieves insect stings and bites
21. Cure gout

Keep in mind, though, that many of these benefits have not been scientifically confirmed and medical conditions should always be evaluated by a physician. While I have not found any negative effects of consuming lemons, except when consumed in concentrate form, you should always use caution when trying any home remedy. With that said, the lemon appears to be one of nature's health-promoting gifts to us that can relieve and, in some cases, even eliminate many common ailments. So, as long as you have the doc's "o.k.," pucker up and enjoy the health benefits of lemons.
