First, of all if you do not suffer from anxiety attacks. Please do not try to be consoling by
telling the person who is having one. That everything is going to be alright. This is not very reassuring or helpful to the person having the anxiety attack. In fact more then likely it is irritating and distracting to them.
You might even make things worst by distracting them from trying to get control of the attack.
Yes, be supportive and ask if there is anything you can do. But back off if the person tells you there is nothing you can do and they want to be alone.
Anxiety attacks are very frightening. They can make a person having them believe they cannot breathe. They breathe in and exhale quickly feeling with each breath they take not enough oxygen is coming in and they can feel light headed and hands and face can go numb. They feel as though they will surely pass out.
Sometimes it can feel as though you are having a heart attack for I swear, I have had anxiety attacks where my heart seem to beat so loud that I felt it physically and loudly in my mind and the more I would concentrate on this. The louder in my ears it would beat. At times I would feel that powerful pulse so loudly in my mind I thought it was going to jump right out of my chest and I would die right then and there of a heart failure.
Thanks to modern medicine, knowledge and counseling we can all learn to deal with these systems much better. I know it's hard if you are just facing the diagnosis to what is wrong with you. But believe me once diagnosed and then having self acceptance of it. You can overcome this.
You can find medications that help with this in sedatives and antidepressants. Though for me and most I know they do not completely ever go away but you gain some control from less frequent attacks.
Learn what things that can trigger you to have them or anything that just keys you up into a nervous energy mode. Counseling and group counseling with others that suffer from this is great for finding solutions and receiving support from others who understand.
Educate yourself with all the great literature full of knowledge out there for the public that you could not find thirty years ago. Thanks to better funding for research we have now a better understanding of anxiety attacks.
I find that everyone finds success with a variety of remedies and all may not go together for each individual. So you need to find what works for you. So work with it, at it everyday. If you don't.
You are missing out on allot in life because anxiety attacks can be crippling and can imprison you. So improve your life your health and find out what is out there!
