Swimming pools are capable of housing numerous activities that are beneficial to the body. Unfortunately, swimming pools are also capable of housing bacteria which can cause skin problems if the pool is not well maintained. Several of the skin conditions listed below can be avoided by taking simple precautions, such as drying off thoroughly.
There are several moisture related skin problems that can be caused by swimming pool exposure. Athlete's foot is a common skin infection. The fungus thrives in warm, moist environments such as community swimming pools and can be avoided by drying the feet, particularly the area between the toes. Bacterial folliculitis (bikini bottom rash) can be a result of a full day of wearing damp, tight-fitting swimwear. Drying off thoroughly and removing wet swimwear can avoid this.
Sunburn can also be a result of swimming pool exposure. Reflections in the water and the reduced amount of clothing worn increase the severity and risk of sunburn. Skin cancer may in turn be at a greater risk due to the long-term exposure to the sun associated with swimming pool activities. Using a high SPF, water resistant sunscreen can minimize the risk of sunburn.
Swimmer's itch is a result of the skin being exposed to excessive amounts of chlorine. Although it is a necessary component to killing bacteria in swimming pools, over chlorination can cause chemical dermatitis. Maintaining appropriate chlorine levels in the swimming pool, showering or towel-drying immediately after swimming can help to avoid swimmer's itch.
Take precautions to protect yourself from skin problems caused by swimming pool exposure. Contact a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment of persistent skin problems caused by swimming pool exposure.
