My granddaughter was being sick and had terrible tummy pains so the doctor admitted her into hospital for tests. She was about eight to nine months old and loved eating a flavored wot-sit and became addicted to them. She sucked all the colourants out and then held her tummy.
Her mum was very upset as the doctors told her there was nothing they could do and she was allergic to something she had eaten. She did go limp and seemed dizzy so we tended to panic a bit.
We stayed in hospital with her and she slept and enjoyed her bottle which gave her comfort, especially as she had dad, mum and Gran with her almost all night. The next day we were told to go and she would be fine. The following few days went by and all seemed fine and suddenly coincidentally there was an article in a magazine about msg being in the various packs of crisps. So monosodiumglutamate was giving young children tummy pains and may have made them sick. We were convinced this was the cause so stopped giving our little precious baby any more foodstuffs which had this additive in it. She changed completely, even her moods improved and she smiled a lot more. We did ring up the hospital and report our findings so that they may be able to help other babies in the same situation so we felt we did right in this case. Hopefully other people learn from our own mistakes. The shops were notified and they said they did not realize mums were giving these items to babies this young anyway. so no comment was made really. The moral of the story is be careful what you give your little ones as they could be allergic to just one colorant or additive and this will affect them for life. Apparently this flavour enhancer is used in most foodstuffs.
