Helping children for their first day of school

Helping your child prepare for the first day of school should begin months ahead of time. There's more to it than packing a lunch or buying new clothes.

First off, is your child ready for school? There's nothing more frustrating for a youngster who is unable to successfully comprehend the curriculum or, too socially immature to interact with other children.

You can determine if your child is ready for school by observing him/her in various circumstances such as sleep overs with a friend, or any group activities like ballet lessons where listening skills are necessary. A similar activity is baseball where one learns about team work.

Can your child retain important information like your name, address and phone number?

Once you're confident that your child meets the necessary requirements to enjoy and succeed in the school environment, you're ready for the next step.

One suggestion is to visit the school and introduce yourself, and your child to the teacher. Schools usually schedule an open house for new students. This is the opportunity to speak to the teacher about any concerns you may have.

A shopping trip with just Mom and Dad would please any child. Allow them to choose several outfits. A backpack is a special item children enjoy selecting. There is usually a favorite character pictured on it, like "Dora" or "Spider Man."

"Playing School," with your child is a creative activity which helps introduce boundaries and routines. You must raise your hand to speak, stay at your desk, and listen to instructions. Take turns at playing the teacher and the student.

Arrange a short trip on a bus if your child has never ridden on one.

Accompany your child on the first day of school and remain there until you're confident that he/she is secure in the environment.

Greet your child at the end of the school day. Ask questions and display any drawings or crafts that were made.
