Over the years our nation has learned to overcome obstacles. Racial tension and racial discrimination are part of the past. People of all races, creeds, and colors are treated equally. Women are no longer discriminated against: they enjoy the same rights and freedoms that have always been given to men. In spite of the great strides our nation has taken to ensure that equality "lives", our nation has failed miserably. There lives a group of people who are being denied their right for the pursuit of happiness. These people are hard working, law abiding, tax paying, voting, legal American citizens. These people, if given the chance, would gladly fight to protect our nation, and the people who reside here. These people have been bashed, labeled, and misjudged because their lifestyle is different from ours. These people are homosexuals and they are currently fighting for their right to legally marry their significant other.

In this, the land of milk and honey, the land of great opportunity, the land of the free, we are not all given all opportunities, nor are we all equal. America gives shelter to many people. Different races, creeds, colors, as well as different religious beliefs; we are the privileged ones. America is also home to another group of people, people with a different way of life, a life style that is unacceptable to the majority: homosexuals. Homosexuals are people. They breathe, eat, dress, drink, and they live, just as we do. They have the same biological body functions, they laugh when they are happy, they cry when they are sad, they bleed if they get cut and they have the same capacity to love as we do, so why do homosexuals not have all of the same rights as heterosexual people? Why are all rights and freedoms of homosexual people not protected by laws? Who gives heterosexuals the right to say that what is good for them, cannot be had by the homosexual population? Heterosexuals say marriage is a good thing but homosexuals cannot partake in it. This controversial issue takes us back to the forties, fifties, and early sixties, when racism against blacks was the issue. One would like to believe this great nation would learn, but then bigotry never truly goes away it merely changes its face. The best way to end legalized racism is by allowing homosexuals the right to marry.
It is a shame, that there are so many bigoted people, with antiquated ideas, in this world. Whatever happened to the days of live and let live? What gives
