It seems like yesterday when I had my wisdom teeth removed, but it's been more than 30 years. They were growing in improperly. After the extraction, there was a stitch in one spot. And my oral surgeon advised me about what would be best to eat for the next couple of days. For me, it would be a little longer because of the stitch.
"Stay away from hard food," he said.
Obviously, that leaves out chocolate chip cookies and ginger snaps!
So, the best foods to eat until the extraction points have healed are softer foods. They are not directing anyone to a liquid diet. Soups are fine. Sandwiches on fresh bread are okay, but try to avoid BLTs. Peanut butter is fine, but be sure it's creamy rather than chunky. Fish is good, too. It's soft when properly cooked, and it won't cause any problems. Spaghetti is okay, too. With or without meat in the sauce, it shouldn't be forbidden. And oatmeal for breakfast may sound bland, but it's better than some of the harder items.
You will want to avoid fresh (uncooked) vegetables for a few days. But you can have the cooked kind. Avoid T-bone steaks or anything that requires a lot of chewing. Fruit cocktail is okay, oranges are okay, and so are bananas. Enough fruit can give you plenty of energy and will help speed the healing process. Mashed potatoes and rice are both acceptable.
Don't forget a bowl of ice cream or sherbet. There's no sense in punishing yourself. The cold items may give you a twinge of pain, but it will pass in time.
There is enough variety of softer foods to give you at least a week without getting bored.
Remember to follow the dentist's instructions. Brushing and flossing will get you back to your T-bones in no time. But take it easy for a few days. There's nothing wrong with that.
