Novel excerpts: Pain from love

"Mark!" she pulled away.
"Rachel, I thought you liked me!"
"I do, but..." she stared at him. She did like him. He put his hands on her shoulders and she lifted her head to meet his gaze.
"For me, Rach," he whispered.
"Mark, I'm fifteen."
"Rach..."
"No, Mark. When I agreed to come here with you, I had no intention of doing anything like this."

He looked at her, and without breaking eye contact, reached up and turned off the light.
Rachel froze.
It was now pitch black the curtains were drawn and she couldn't see Mark at all. She heard him move towards her and stepped backwards. She felt his hands on her shoulders again and stopped. What was happening? How had it all gone so wrong?

The two of them had swapped 'Mark-episodes' and experiences and had schemed about how to get Mark to notice them for about a year. But then Emily had decided that liking Mark was pointless she was never going to get anywhere with him and had turned her affections to someone else.
Before Rachel realised that she liked Mark, her piano teacher, Matt Miller had been the main feature in her daydreams. However, these really were dreams. She knew there was no chance she would ever be with him. For one thing, he was twenty one, and she was only fifteen, but she'd known since her first lesson with him that he was an amazing guy. He lived near St. Peters, but stayed at the school, saying he liked it there and felt at home; he had always boarded when he had attended St. Peters as a pupil. He had started covering
