I believe that God is a creation of man. Why? Power is the answer.
First let us clarify that we are not our body. Our body is an animal, a human animal, and, of course, has basic needs, eating, for energy; sleeping, for gaining strength; sex, for procreation; etc.
Then comes "us". We are what we think, and the more experience we have, the more sophisticated we get. We need answers for every new experience we have. We need to know a "why, "how", "when", "who", and "where".
Looking for those answers, we feel uneasy, we fear the unknown. we are afraid of failing. We do not trust each other. Why?
To answer that "Why?" Let us go back to the prehistoric human being. They were hunters as a way to provide food to the members of the community where they lived. To the elders, women, and offspring. Hunting was dangerous, risky business. Many died trying to hunt.
They lived like any other heard of animals, they follow the lead of the strongest and wiser member of their community. Usually and elder. Numbers were very important, The crowed the tribe was, the stronger they were. That was important, because they had to fight against other tribes for the right to hunt. And many more trying to hunt.
The time passed and they discover that using rock to hunt and for daily chores, was an advantage, They realized that they had to protect that newly found tool that gave them an advantage, in other words...Power upon others.
The human animal is a fearful being, like any other animal. They were easily scared. They fear the unknown, Thunder, the sun, because they sensed that it was a source of life. So the become to realize that the new tool was given to them by the source of life to protect their lives. They were the chosen ones. Everybody else did not have the right to use it. And so they started using that power to subdue others. Rules started to be given. Punishment was the controlling weapon. They had somebody en charged of communicating with the almighty giver of life. The elder was en charged of that and enforcing the rules.
Then they discover the use of fire, agriculture was the big boom. Farming allow them to settle. Towns were built. Culture grew. So their way of living. The Almighty became half men half animal, until they got to a point that they became image and resemblance of them.
Commandments were given to keep the members of the community all together for strength.
If you love the god of your tribe, you will stay. If you sanctified the days dedicated to the god. If you honor your parents, you will stay. If you did not kill the members of your community, you will keep it strong, (It did not matter if you did so to the members of other ones). No adultery with non members of your society, you will make them strong. etc.
They created messengers to communicate what god wanted, they had to fly, so they give them feathered wings. (The only thing known that could fly were birds, and they had feathered wings). Etc.
Crime and punishment. The golden rule.
God is our creation to deal with the unknown, with our failures. We never want to be mistaken, When ever you do fail, you are never guilty. "They told me to do so...", "It was gods will", "I did not know", "It suppose to be like this", etc.
We only need a God to justify ourselves, somebody else is the guilty one.
We have pride, we want power, we want to be better than others. We want to be always right. God is the outside solution. We can not see him. He is all powerful, All love, he acts in mysterious ways. All that goes against our nature, we want to know, we like to experiment, but that goes against gods will.
Crime and punishment.
