The best lighthouse bed-and-breakfasts in the US

"We'll never make it!" John screamed to his crew over the deafening noise of the storm. The year was 1894. John's small fishing boat was caught in a terrible rainstorm of the coast of Oregon. John had much to live for; waiting at home was John's wife and 4 small children. The storm raged as waves broke over the bow and lightning flashed as his crew tried to avoid the rocks in the small harbor. Just then he saw the light! The glow was coming from the shore! The lighthouse beacon shone brightly through the fog and thunder. The guiding light coming from shore would help ensure their safety! This time John and his crew would make it home, thanks to the quick efforts of the lighthouse keeper.

Lighthouses have been in use for centuries. They gained popularity in Europe as fishing boats and explorers begun to travel further than ever imagined. Countless brave light housekeepers have fought solitude and poor weather conditions to promise safety to many a mariner. Although once countless lighthouses stood on quiet shores, only 1500 lighthouses exist worldwide today. Now you too can experience life at historic lighthouses around our country like their keepers once did. Many of these lighthouses have been converted into museums and bed and breakfasts. Spend a night or a week enjoying the solitude and beauty of these magnificent landmarks.

One famous lighthouse still in use today is the one that John spotted in Oregon. Located off Highway 101 on the Oregon Pacific Coast is the Heceta Head Lighthouse. This landmark is now a museum and bed and breakfast. The history of this lighthouse offers you a chance to step back in time. It opened in 1894 and is in such a remote location that many lighthouse keepers came and went, none able to withstand the solitude. After the attack on Pearl Harbor the Coast Guard stationed two men here along with their families. Today it is operated by the Krogan family who also volunteered their help in the lighthouses restoration project. Depending on which accommodation you choose, plan on spending around $200 a night plus cost for an extra person. Every room has a view of the Pacific Ocean! The rocky landscape is serene and private. With a guest capacity of only 14, one can escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Wake early and do not miss a 7 course breakfast offering the best of American northwest cuisine. Finally, end your day cuddled with your loved one on the expansive front porch watching the sun set over the Pacific
