Yes, of course public schools should offer courses on the Bible...and the Torah, the Koran,Buddhist sutras, the Bahagavad Gita, Native American legends, the writings of Bahaullah, and numerous other holy books. What a wonderful way to promote understanding and acceptance of the validity of all personal beliefs, and to discourage ignorance and prejudice.

In a way, this response may be seen as a somewhat sarcastic "yes", but, if a school is going to offer a course on the Bible, should it not offer study of other religions, as well? If the school does not, then it is promoting Christianity, and that would be completely against the foundation of the United States of America. Our country was founded by Europeans (yes, it was populated long before that, but many of us have European origins at some point)for the purpose of religious freedom. Public schools, funded by governmental and taxpayer money, should be held to the theoretical "separation of church and state"; therefore, they cannot, by law, promote or teach one religion and not others.

There is one instance in which the Bible may be taught indirectly, as a piece of literature, like any other written work. Then again, if one teaches the Bible as a piece of literature, why not the stories and teachings of the Bahagavad Gita, Bahaullah, or Buddhist sutras? The ones that I have read are more exciting, beautiful, and easier to understand than the Bible.
