I will be 60 next month and I can think of several party ideas to celebrate a new decade. The first decision is whom to invite or if you should invite everybody because sometimes at this age, you have become friends with many people, not all the same.
If you are choosing people of different physical abilities, then the perfect party would be in a restaurant that is a favorite of your guest of honor. You can get tables put together so it is easier to talk, maybe a special room, and just have a ball, bringing up old memories or the hobby of choice. Also think about what the guest of honor would do if the waiters came out with a cake, singing Happy Birthday. Would he laugh and be pleased or would he slink under the table with embarrassment?
If the person is a card freak, you might invite an even number of people to your home to play euchre, poker, or double pinochle. Since I love to play cards, this would be my choice! Instead of a meal, snacks and drinks would be appropriate, and a cake, of course. You could switch players or whatever you choose but it makes a homey type of party.
The guest might have active friends and a bowling party might be in order. You could talk to the owner of the bowling alley and bring in a cake with plates, forks, and napkins before the party starts as most bowling alleys are not equipped for that sort of thing.
Maybe something smaller and more intimate is in order. How about a small trip to someplace your guest has always wanted to see but never got around going to? A park, museum, famous house, or show would be nice.
Or better yet, maybe instead of inviting all of these people to do something with the guest, you could have a sort of money party where the guests put money in and buy the guest and his companion a cruise or flight to somewhere he has mentioned.
Life is a lot different now than it was when my grandparents were in their sixties. They were OLD and most of these things they would not have been interested in but the sixties now are far from old. So just because the number sounds big, don't base your party ideas on that. And be sure to decide on what the guest would appreciate, not what is most meaningful to you.
