"The Robbery"
It was almost midnight, and I was working the graveyard shift at a Wal-Mart store in Festus, Missouri. For me it was a night like any other. Working at a super center, and getting trucks-upon-trucks (2 Trucks on that perticular night, by the way) of freight which need to be taken out to the sales floor to be stocked. It is rough and you go thru a lot of mental stress because you are so sleep deprived. Still when I compare it to my other job as a pharmacy technician (which after working for 6 years in both hospital and retail, I just grew tired of) this type of work is probably the best thing in the whole world. That and added to the fact I didn't to do a lot of traveling made things so much more sweeter for me.
I'd been with the store for only 5 months, but never really experienced much in the way of excitement.
That was until the night we had a robbery.
I had just gone back to the break room to take my 15 minutes when I saw Scott (an over-night store manager) run past me. When I asked him what was going on, Scott told me that they had just called a Code White (which means an accident). I must have been so preoccupied with taking my break, I don't even remember hearing it. Feeling that I should go help, I ran out with Scott to the front registers where we found Pat (one of the cashiers) sitting on the ground. She wasn't hurt, but she was just a little shook-up because she had just been robbed. What happened was is that a customer had come up to Pat's register to have some items rung out. When she had her register open to get cash out, the customer actually came around, and pushed her to the floor. After doing this, he grabbed her tray from her open register, and ran out the front exit door. While Shirley (one of our co-managers) called out the Code White for Pat, 2 of our other employees: LeQuane and Dan (who were also getting stuff rung up so they could go on break) chased out after the crook.
While I stayed with the other employees who gathered around Pat to make sure she was okay, Scott ran out the front to see how the crook got. He found out that LeQuane, Dan, and an undercover cop (who was off duty that night, and doing some shopping at our store) had caught up with him at a nearby Murphy's Oil gas station (which is part of Wal-Mart mind you), and he was hand-cuffed. They kept him there until other police officers arrived on the scene. Finally, after they got our statements they took him downtown. I didn't find out until after later talking
