What do you do?
I get that question alot, probably because I am at the bus stop in my slippers, (much to my 8 year old daughters dismay). But seriously, when people ask me that I tell them I am a recruiter and I work from my home. "REALLY, I would love that." HA, that is what I want to say.
Most days it is a great gig, I put the kids on the bus, clean up the house, throw in some laundry, maybe walk the dog, or ride my bike....depending on what time zone my current work is in I may start working at 8am or I may start at 10am or 11am. I spend most of my work day, on the phone, calling clients, candidates, setting up interviews, screening potential employees, anything that I can do on the phone before my kids get home at 2:30pm.
At the witching hour when the school bus arrives, I stop working, coordinate homework, snacks, fights among siblings and all that! Once they are settled in the evening I go back to work, I run ads, do internet research, go thru resumes and plan my calls for the next day.
In reality there is a true advantage to working at home:
1. Your house is usually clean and laundry is caught up. (if you plan it right)
2. You are there for your kids, you are raising them.
3. It can be very lucrative.
4. You will never have to wear pantyhose or a tie again.
The difficulties include:
1. You must be organized and stay focused. Not so easy when you are home.
2. Establishing a balance between work and home, you must not work 24 hours to be successful.
3. Making your friends and neighbors understand that you ARE WORKING, they cannot drop in, call etc.
4. Get out of your chair. You cannot sit there all day and be productive, you must get out, even if it is to take a walk.
I love working from home, I try and stay on track but I have my days. I was recently offered a "real job". I thought long and hard and opted to stay where I am...in my slippers.
