Filtered water definitely makes a big difference in the taste of tea and it makes a difference in the gourmet coffees more than it does in the standard old Folgers and Maxwell House. It makes a difference there too but not as much as with the freshly ground beans like Starbucks, Caribou, Seattle's Best and my favorite Dunkin Donut's Dark Roast. I am not much of a premium blend person when it comes to most things but I do like the best of teas and coffees. I will spend a little extra for GOOD coffee and tea. I drink a lot of Green Tea and I enjoy all of them but they are definitely better with filtered water.
Water quality varies a lot depending in what part of the country you live in. some of the best tasting non-filtered water I have ever had is in North Central Arkansas where they have so many deep cold springs but I still like to filter the water for coffee or tea. Some of the worst water I have run into is in the Powder Basin of Wyoming up around Gillette. We had a well that was 805 feet deep and the water had so much iron and gas in it that after we lived out there for a couple months my wife's beautiful gray-white hair was a reddish color. You could hardly take a bath in it let alone drink it. And to make a good cup of coffee or tea out of it was out of the question. Denver has pretty good water but they do chlorinate it and add fluoride. For most things we don't filter it but for gourmet coffee and gourmet tea we do filter it.. If you ever get used to the taste of good coffee and tea made with filtered water, you wont like it near as well if you make it with non filtered water.
IF you have any doubts, make two cups, one with plain old tap water and one with filtered water and then tell me what you think. I'll bet you like the cup with filtered water better.
