Moving can be one of life's most stressful events. Whether you will live in two houses your whole life or you move every time your lease runs out, you can make your next move much easier, and simplify your everyday life at the same time.
I recently made a move to a fourth state in 3 years. Here is the most important thing I learned: simplify. In my last move, there was a box of nostalgic things that I "Couldn't bear to part with." Well, that box hadn't even been opened for 2 years, so I opened it, enjoyed the memories that came back and then re-labeled it: "Garage Sale." I really don't need that ugly jar of sand to remember my trip to Florida. Just keep asking yourself if you really need or use these things. Purging is a hard process, but it does get easier and trust me, you will enjoy your new lack of clutter.
Once you have gotten rid of all the things you didn't really need, make sure everything is organized. Things will be much easier to pack and unpack if everything is in the right room to begin with.
The next tip is uncommon, but it has made such a difference for me. Don't only think of packing supplies as cardboard boxes, bubble wrap and newsprint. Use your kitchen towels to wrap your glassware instead of packing them in separate boxes, use a blanket to wrap your vases (the possibilities go on and on). You will consolidate several boxes, fragile goods will be even safer and you won't have to buy as many packing supplies. And for the boxes: don't purchase too many cardboard ones, instead pick up large, attractive and sturdy storage boxes with lids at a home goods store. If you use them for your everyday storage (CDs, candles, papers, craft supplies, etc) when it comes time to move, those boxes are already packed and ready to go! Purchase smaller storage boxes for smaller items and then all you will have to do is place those in a larger moving box, it is much easier than having a box full of loose odds and ends. Just get creative!
There are many tips that I haven't even touched here because you can find them anywhere: pack things least used first, label your boxes well, make a checklist All these things are very important and even necessary for a good move, but there is so much more we can do. Think outside the box and your next move will be the easiest you have ever made!
