There is hope for a great date with good wine that you selected yourself, but it does not
lie in trying to fake your way through the list. And how well could it really end if you
tried to anyway? If your date knows anything about wine and sees you trying to fake it
(yes, it will be obvious), they could become suspicious of everything else you say that
evening. Say you do bluff your way through it and the date still goes wellwhat
happens on the second or third date? You will feel anything but impressive when they
finally figure you out. What really is impressive is a well-rounded personality, and even
a slight understanding of wine can be a demonstration of that.
What you should do is actually learn a little bit about wine. Okay, so it is not the
beverage of choice for guzzling during the game, but enjoying wine is not rocket science
and it doesn't require as much time as you might think. (Although the more you put into
it, the more you will get out of it.) Just start with some internet research: look for basic
information about wine, you'll probably be surprised at what you do and do not know
already. After you have read a little bit, buy a few bottles. Pay attention when you start
drinking them, write down your thoughts, see if you can pick out any flavors or scents
and then compare them all to each other. You probably won't be able to pick out much at
first, but the more wines you try, and the closer you pay attention, the better you'll get at
it. You'll be surprised how quickly you can actually really learn about winethen you
won't have to worry about faking it in the first place.
If you still want a couple tips for date night, remember this: just because a wine is more
expensive, that does not mean it is better, if you're ordering for both of you, ask the
waiter for a recommendation (perhaps something along the lines of "I am not familiar
with these particular labels, which do you recommend and what is it's personality?") and
go with a middle-of-the-road price.
You are, after all, going on the date to get to know the other person and enjoy yourselves
right? If you haven't yet taken the time to learn about wine, just be honest, if the person
you're out with is worth taking out a second time, they will find your honesty more
impressive than a silly act.
