Ways to weave hair

by Toya

Weaving hair means a way of sewing or braiding the hair. There are different ways to weave hair. You usually use extensions to weave the hair or sometimes you can use different colored string or ribbons with beads. Traditionally it was a way to style black hair and used a lot for special occasions like weddings. Nowadays it's quite big fashion.

One way of weaving afro and black hair is to plait the hair in sections tightly around the hair line. Depending what kind of look you're creating you can braid the hair either in sections around in circles or use just part of your hairline, for example the bottom part of your hairline. Then you get a hair piece which usually has some fabric at the end and a hair sewing needle and attach the hair piece by sewing it onto the braided hair line parts. If it's done properly it should blend in with your natural hair and look smooth. You can create whole looks like this; even make highlights and different effects. For example you could have a bun at the top of your head and then long extensions at the back.

Another way of weaving is to braid your hair into different styles. You can do this by separating your hair into small sections and then plaiting either using just the natural hair or by adding pieces of synthetic hair. I say synthetic as I don't really like using human hair but some do. You can create great styles like this and add beads and other hair colors for different effects. You can also use thin ribbon pieces or string with beads and weave them into the style. Simple looks may just have beads at the end of the plaits but if you want to go for more of an elegant look you can use string with beads and sew them into a style. Men may have braids in different shapes tightly plaited around the top of their head and then plaits coming down at the back with beads at the end.
