First you need to evaluate the situation which led to them being an ex. If its something that you can get over then by all means go for it. What one person may see as unforgivable others may not; it truly varies from person to person.
Physical and verbal abuse are things that I will not tolerate in a relationship, but there are individuals who can forgive these wrongs and stay with someone. Sometimes a person can have a moment and make these type of mistakes, but if they really care for you and your well being they would never occur.
Sometimes the break up is mutual, and you both felt it was something you wanted at the time. After being in the dating scene for awhile; there is the realization that your ex is the one you were meant to be with. This doesn't happen often, and if you're fortunate enough to get a second chance; go for it and be happy.
My philosophy is that an ex is an ex for a reason and the event that led up to your relationship failing is bound to resurface itself. Sometimes it happens in an instant, or it could even be years. It truly is possible for someone to change, but to tell the sad truth the average person rarely ever does. We as humans are creatures of habit and it is very hard for us to break into a new routine.
I almost feel bad saying this, but I've never been in love with anyone enough to want them back once it's over. There has never been a person that made me feel like my life just wasn't complete without them in it. Maybe I hold back on my feelings just a tad because of past hurts; therefore it's harder for me to understanding getting back into a relationship with an ex.
