The u-haul was packed to the ceiling and the green Bronco was stuffed to the brim, everything that meant anything was packed. A few toys littered the back seat along with books and blankets. A young boy stood saying goodbye to friends and his mother said her farewells to her friends too. She had made a few friends since she came to live here years ago, an unwed mother, scared and alone.
Lesley stood as her son hugged his best friend one last time. The two had been friends since the day they came here. She would have never caused the pain for her son, but she had a ranch to run and doing it over the phone wasn't getting the work done. The summer visits showed how the ranch had began downward each year she visited.
Lesley had managed to stay away from the ranch and from Jack Evans for the last eight years, now that would be a problem. He was the foreman of her ranch, and the reason she had left. Soon enough she would be over him. Soon enough he'd be mad enough to kill her, to quit her ranch, and to leave maybe forever.
"Are you Hungary?" She asked Tim.
They pulled into a fast food place on the next exit. She counted the miles until she had to face the facts of what she had done. Later the road was less tiring and the miles seemed to fly by. The traffic had thinned to little or none. Lesley breathed deeply, only one hundred miles left to go. Lesley glanced at her watch. Ten hours from when they had left home in Florida. Oklahoma state line, another reminder of how much closer she was to her destination. She thought to herself it was about nine
