The Number 24 Starring, Kobe Bryant
I recently rented the movie, The Number 23. If you haven't seen the movie and you don't want me to spoil it, you should stop reading right now.
The movie is about a guy, played by Jim Carrey, who is reading a book titled, The Number 23. He becomes obsessed with the storyline which is all about how everything in the world revolves around the number 23. This includes his social security number, license number, wedding anniversary, birthday everything. The disturbing part about the book is that it describes a murder and it gives clues as to who committed the crime and it even gives the location of the missing body. (Bear with me, this will get to Kobe shortly) Now, Jim does find the body of the victim and his obsession over the number 23 is overwhelming him at this point. Unfortunately for Jim, his wife does some investigating of her own and she discovers that Jim actually committed the murder and that he wrote the book! Jim wrote the book and then jumped from a window which caused him to lose all memory of the murder, the book, the number 23, etc
Okay, now back to Kobe. I think that the movie was actually written about him and his career. Seriously, lets look at the similarities.
Kobe is obsessed with the number 23. No, not in a way that hes adding up street addresses to see if they equal 23 but in a way that he believes that he is the next Michael Jordan. Who, wore number 23.. spooky huh? Kobe's obsession to be number 23 has taken him on a horribly painful journey similar to the character in the movie. Kobe has committed quite a few crimes (I wont call them murders thats a bit extreme) along the way. Here are some of his victims:
Shaquille ONeal. Now, maybe Kobe didn't kill Shaq off on his own but he was certainly an accomplice. Kobe did not like to share the ball or the spotlight. Shaq was the player that the LA fans hung their championship banners on and that drove Kobe crazy.
Jerry Buss. He owns one of the most storied franchises in the NBA and one of the top marketed teams in the league yet, he cant make Kobe happy. This reminds me of the doctor from the movie. He wants to help Kobe but he slowly becomes obsessed with the number 23 and as a result, he cant think of anything else. Like, replacing Shaq or signing a number two guard.
Phil Jackson. Now, Phil is the equivalent of the wife from the movie. Phil knows all about Kobe's obsession. Phil has actually seen the power of the number 23 up close and
