Many students at 2-year colleges are unsure of what major they would like to pick when going from high school straight to college. Others might not have enough money to go away to a larger, 4-year in institution.
It is wise to go to a 2-year, or community college, when one of the above reasons is true. Once you receive an Associates degree or other progress towards your chosen 4-year program, it is easy to transfer to a 4-year school, as long as your grades are good.
One benefit of going to the smaller school first is that 2-year schools are typically a lot cheaper than larger schools. So, if you are unsure of what classes to take, you can afford to "feel it out" by taking a plethora of courses, in order to decide which major is right for you.
There are guidance counselors, or advisers in college- just like you had in high school. Consulting your adviser is very helpful in deciding which major to choose. They might ask you what interests you and base that information on what classes you would be interested in taking. Once you find your niche, you will declare a major.
Many 2-year institutions are also branches of a larger school. It is especially easy to transfer credits through the same school system. If you attend an accredited college, you should have no problems transferring credits, though. And- if your grades are good, you will most likely have no problems getting accepted to transfer to the 4-year college.
