SEXY, SKINNY, & SLUTTY
Shopping through Target this weekend, I noticed a young girl, probably sixteen years old, with jeans so bloody low her pubic hair was showing. I'm not kidding. I wanted to ask, "Honey, where the hell's your mother? Did you know you could be picked up for indecent exposure? Do you have any idea how ridiculous you look?" But I said nothing, and her hair continued lingering from her faded jeans like some sort of greeting.
Pop culture tells these girls it's all right to look like a slut and a prostitute. If you have the body, flaunt it, baby. If your boobs are too small, have surgery to make them larger. Jenna, of Warsop Vale, near Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, said she had been thinking about breast enlargement since she was 12. She insisted: "You've got to have breasts to be successful" What do your parents think, Jenna?
When a girl feels she needs big boobs to be accomplished in life, something is dreadfully wrong. And by successful, is Jenna saying successful to (boys) men? Seriously, would a woman in the business world, care if one had big breasts. I think not. You're not going to break through the glass ceiling by having big knockers, darling. The glass ceiling is reserved for the Hilary's, Oprah's, and Ivanka's-not the Brittany's, Lohan's, and Hilton's.
And it's not only breasts the media says need fixing, it's the whole body; the message is thin, thin thin. The message is starve, starve, starve. The message is please, please, please.
Meenakshi Gigi Durham of the University of Iowa in Iowa City, who has conducted extensive research on teen media use among middle-school girls, thinks as a society we should worry about this trend. "All the girls I have talked to have expressed some dissatisfaction with their bodies and many of them have resorted to extreme measures such as starvation."
Durham also believes the magazines are missing the chance to help girls develop a healthy attitude toward sex. "What's presented as sexy is the bare midriff, the busty blonde. It's such a fiction. Anyone of any body type and race can experience her sexuality and enjoy it, but these magazines don't offer this message." (Women's News Magazine)
What it truly comes down to is girls are being programmed (by the media) to please boys. What other reason would they feel the need for breast enlargement, revealing their pubic hair, wearing t-shirts up to their nipples, or having "rainbow parties?"
From here, it was only a short step to tales of "rainbow parties" where several girls wearing different colors of lipstick would take turns servicing a boy until their lipstick traces formed a "rainbow" of rings. In 2003, this peril was explored by Oprah herself, with the help of O magazine feature writer Michelle Burford, who interviewed 50 girls, some as young as 9, and painted a frightening picture of kiddie debauchery. "Are rainbow parties pretty common?" inquired a rapt Oprah, to which Burford replied, "I think so. At least among the 50 girls that I talked tothis was pervasive" (The Great Fellatio Scare, Cathy Young).
Should we be scared? You damn right. When our daughters believe they can only receive power by having big breasts, skinny bodies, and giving blowjobs; this is not only a concern, but also a national disaster.
Next time you happen to see a young girl with her boobs hanging out, her pubic hair exposed and glistening, or her t-shirt rolled up to her nipples, ask yourself this: who is she trying to please? You can bet your ass, it's not for herself. No.
Or better yet, ask her this: "WHERE THE HELL IS YOUR MOTHER?"
