Reflections: Appreciating winter

I tend to enjoy the cool afternoons that accompany a sunny day in the winter. I love the crisp, new feeling that the air gets. I get a bit of a bounce in my step knowing that the holidays are just around the corner.

I am filled with joy that my family and I will get to know each other once more, as the other seasons seem to take us away from home and each other. Winter seems to bring us back together, huddling over cups of hot chocolate, planning a holiday meal, or decorating for some holiday. Shopping for just the right gift for each person on our list, wrapping those presents and putting them under the tree.

These are all my favorite memories of winters past, but what I look forward to the most is probably the simplest of things there is. I look forward to the evenings that we spend together. I love popping popcorn on the stove, preparing steamy hot cups of cocoa, and cuddling under the blankets in my favorite old pajamas with my family in their favorite old pajamas and watching some old black and white movie that we have seen a hundred times. I love hearing my children say their favorite lines along with the actors in the shows. I often miss hearing their laughter in other seasons because they tend to spend those other seasons with friends learning about the world and their place in it. Winter is my time with them. I am looking forward to getting to know my family once more as winter approaches with its freezing temperatures and illnesses.
